About Treatment

High-powered light in the near-infrared spectrum reaches past the skin’s top layer to gradually heat sub-dermal tissue. NIR therapy is powered by LED which has a gentler delivery than laser and will not damage tissue. This targeted light energy is applied with a precise hand-piece and it causes fibers to contract and tighten. The tissue is heated, but not destroyed, so it kick-starts cellular repair and collagen production. Unlike other treatments, the top layer of skin is completely unaffected. At the most, some users experience mild redness that fades quickly and it feels just slightly warm during treatment.

How does it work?

The NIR procedure uses a safe level of infrared light that is able to penetrate the deeper layers of skin. The light energy heats the water in the skin tissue and causes collagen fibres to contract and tighten. It also stimulates fibroblasts to repair skin cells and produce new collagen. This helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and gives long-lasting firmness to sagging skin. Because the NIR light energy only heats the deeper layer of skin that contains collagen, it leaves the top, surface layer unaffected.

What is involved?

Before we start the treatment, we apply a cooling gel to your skin. We then pass the NIR handpiece over the targeted areas of your skin. This heats up your skin until it reaches a working temperature of between 39 and 42 degrees Centigrade. We maintain this temperature for a further 10 to 15 minutes. Depending on the size of the area we are treating, the whole procedure should be completed in about 30 to 40 minutes.

How many treatment will I need?

The number of treatments required depends on the size of the tattoo, the ink used, skin type, the quality of tattoo and the age of the tattoo.

Are the any risks & complications?

Because the treatment involves heating your skin to a relatively high temperature, you should expect some redness afterwards. You may also have some mild swelling, but this and the redness should settle down within a few hours (24 hours at most). Other than this, there is no downtime and you can continue with your day immediately after treatment.

What is the basic aftercare advice?

Our laser specialist will go through this in detail and give you an information sheet to take home. Here are just some of the aftercare advice; Keep the treated area clean and dry Make sure clothes are not rubbing the treated area Do not expose the treated area to heat such as hot baths etc for 24-48 hours Swimming should be avoided until the area is fully healed Do not scratch the skin treated if scabs form these must not be picked, or secondary infection is possible Do not expose the treated area to the sun or sun beds

Why do I need to have a patch test prior to treatment?

All patients are required to have a 24hr patch test prior to any of our laser treatments. This is so we can quickly identify if you have sensitive skin towards laser and to avoid any adverse reactions.

How soon will I see the results?

You should notice your skin looking firmer immediately after the treatment. This is partly due to the slight swelling that is a normal side effect of NIR skin tightening. When this swelling has gone down (within 24 hours), the treated skin will feel smoother and you will see some improvement. However, the most significant results happen gradually over the following 2 or 3 months. In this period, the tightening becomes more visible as the skin forms new collagen.
